Shirley Mason's Ghetto Youth Theatre Project

shanktown

Shanktown tickets - Millfield Theatre, London - July 20 & 21, 2007 - only £5

Revenge is home-made, served ice cold... What enz would you go for your fam cuz? Who would you ask for help?
The story unravels in Shanktown by Ghetto Youth Theatre. The young people are known as the Ghetto Challengers who confront SAAPS (Stereotypes, Attitudes, Assumptions and Perceptions).
Say something. Pray something. Elevate and Expand. Arm yourself with knowledge and information. Keep it real.

Ghetto Youth Theatre: Completely taken off

Ghetto Youth Theatre has completely taken off since securing a place to rehearse and perform. EAP have provided space for the 30 strong and growing cast of Ghetto Youth Theatre known as the Ghetto Challengers.
Shirley Mason, Director and poet approached Creative London North, through EAP’s business clinic. After an initial consultation and subsequent meetings, Shirley was in a position to start putting her idea into practice and with some swift negotiating skills and charm, secured a rehearsal space in ArtsZone’s theatre.
Nearly six months on and many rehearsals later, Ghetto Youth Theatre are in production
with their first full length play called ‘SHANKTOWN’.
The play examines, the reasons behind the recent reported growth in knife and gun crime, how the effects of this are felt throughout the whole community and poses the question “How do we as a community combat this”?
Shirley’s aim is to raise awareness of the issues that affect young people and society in general using theatre as an exciting, accessible and stimulating medium.
Shirley’s efforts and enthusiasm have not gone unnoticed, and more recently she has just taken up an outreach post to help support those out of work to gain skills and confidence to get back into work, through an EAP led programme called, Branching Out.
‘There are many more productions in the pipeline; I feel I am able to be creative again. EAP and the Creative London North programme have enabled me to make my vision
tangible.’
